Mount Skokomish Wilderness
Mount Skokomish Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area within Olympic National Forest on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. Located in Mason County just north of Lake Cushman, the wilderness covers rugged terrain defined by two parallel rocky ridges running roughly northeast to southwest. Elevations climb from roughly 2,000 feet in the lower valleys to more than 6,400 feet at the summit of Mount Skokomish, creating a compact landscape of steep ridges, glaciated basins, and forested valleys. The area protects a transition zone between low-elevation old-growth forests and high-elevation alpine environments characteristic of the eastern Olympic Mountains. Its ridge-and-basin topography gives rise to the headwaters of the Hamma Hamma River, which gathers water from the Mildred Lakes and surrounding tributary streams before flowing eastward. The wilderness is known for its dramatic peaks, including Mounts Skokomish, Lincoln, Cruiser, Pershing, Washington, Rose, and Ellinor, as well as the popular Sawtooth Ridge climbing area between Mounts Lincoln and Cruiser. Mount Skokomish Wilderness is part of a broader system of protected landscapes adjoining Olympic Wilderness, and together these areas form one of the most extensive preserved mountain ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest. The wilderness supports a mix of old-growth conifer forests, subalpine fir and pine stands, and rugged ridgelines that harbor elk, black bear, mountain goat, and other characteristic species of the eastern Olympics.
