Poland's anastomosing river wetland of the Upper Narew valley
Narwiański Park Narodowy
Narwiański Park Narodowy is one of Poland's twenty-three national parks, established on 1 July 1996. It lies in the northeastern part of the country, within Podlaskie Voivodeship, west of Białystok, between the towns of Suraż and Rzędziany. The protected area sits in the broad floodplain of the Upper Narew River, where the river braids into an unusual anastomosing network of channels, oxbows, marshes, and meadows. What sets the park apart is its watery, lowland character. Rather than mountains or deep forests, the landscape is defined by a mosaic of sedge and reed beds, willow thickets, alder carrs, mineral mounds called grądziki, and seasonally flooded grasslands shaped by centuries of traditional mowing. The park is a stronghold for wetland birds, including internationally important populations of aquatic warbler, and serves as a refuge for beavers, otters, moose, and numerous amphibians and fish. Narwiański Park Narodowy is also notable as the only Polish national park without a formally designated strict-protection zone, meaning that the entire area is managed under active and landscape protection regimes. A surrounding buffer zone extends the network across roughly three times the park's own surface, linking protected land with the wider floodplain landscape of the Narew.
