Naturschutzgebiet Ostenberg

Naturschutzgebiet Ostenberg is a small nature reserve covering about 21 hectares on the southern slopes of the 566-meter Ostenberg hill, located south of Bestwig in the Hochsauerland district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The reserve protects a mixed forest of European beech and Norway spruce on steep hillside terrain, together with a disused quarry that shelters the notable Ostenberg cave system. The cave, with a total passage length of 622 meters distributed across several levels, sits unusually high above the valley floor and was only discovered in 1991 during quarrying operations. The nature reserve has been part of the Natura 2000 network since 2004, forming one of ten sub-areas of the larger Habitats Directive site "Höhlen und Stollen bei Bestwig und Olsberg." It was formally designated as a nature reserve in 2008 through the Bestwig landscape plan. The reserve combines woodland protection with cave conservation, safeguarding both a distinctive moss and fern flora on shaded slopes and important winter bat habitat underground. Its protection reflects the German recognition of the area's rarity, particular character, and landscape beauty, criteria that underpin the country's nature reserve designation system.
