Scherfbachtal Nature Reserve (Odenthal)

The Scherfbachtal Nature Reserve (Odenthal) is a landscape protection area in the municipality of Odenthal, in the Rheinisch-Bergisch district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It consists of five separate sections stretching between the villages of Odenthal and Klev, all following the course and tributaries of the Scherfbach stream as it flows toward the Dhünn river. The reserve protects an unusually well-preserved section of a low-mountain stream valley in the Bergisches Land. Its habitats include near-natural meandering brooks, alder and ash floodplain forests, oak-hornbeam woodlands, beech high forests, wet meadows, marshy floodplain pastures, and steep valley flanks rich in ferns, mosses, and lichens. Designated in 1994 and classified under IUCN Category IV as a Habitat/Species Management Area, the reserve is part of the broader flowing-water network of the Bergisches Land and serves as an important headwater catchment area for the west-flowing Scherfbach.
