A community-based marine reserve on western Yap protecting reef channels and mangrove-filtered waters

Nimpal Channel Marine Conservation Area

Nimpal Channel Marine Conservation Area is a small community-managed marine reserve on the western side of Yap's main island, in the Federated States of Micronesia. The 77-hectare area protects a coastal reef channel that lies between the island's fringing habitats and its mangrove-fringed shore, and it plays an outsized role in sustaining the health of local fisheries and reef ecosystems. The reserve was created jointly by the villages of Okaw and Kaday, which sit within Yap's Weloy municipality, together with the Yap Conservation Action Planning initiative. This community-led origin gives the site both a strong local stewardship role and a place within wider regional conservation efforts on Yap, where marine habitats and traditional fishing practices remain closely linked. Although it was originally established to safeguard fish stocks, the conservation area took on additional ecological importance after the crown-of-thorns starfish began affecting Yap's coral reefs in 2009. The decision to protect nearby mangrove forests as a sanctuary has been particularly important for the site, because the mangroves filter runoff before it reaches the Nimpal Channel, supporting the recovery of the broader reef system.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
