Nissum Bredning

Nissum Bredning is the westernmost broad stretch of the Limfjorden, a long, fjord-like waterway that crosses northern Denmark. It lies between the Thyborøn Channel, where the Limfjorden opens to the North Sea, and Oddesund, where the Oddesund Bridge carries road and rail across to the peninsula of Thyholm. The bay is shallow, generally only a few meters deep, and its shoreline combines sandy beaches, low spits, narrow tangen, and a few notable cliff sections shaped by glacial history. The bay forms a transitional landscape between open sea and sheltered inland fjord, with winding channels, lagoon-like coastal lakes, and extensive shallow sand banks along its western side. Because of its shallow waters, surrounding meadows, and tidal flats, Nissum Bredning has been recognized as an important area for waterbirds and coastal habitats, and it is integrated into a broader Natura 2000 area that links it with neighboring Agger Tange, Skibsted Fjord, and Agerø.
