It runs along the upper Neckar valley between Starzach and Rottenburg am Neckar and extends into the wooded side valleys of Rommelstal, Starzeltal, and Eyachtal. The protected area is defined by the characteristically incised Muschelkalk (shell limestone) valley of the Neckar, where forested steep slopes alternate with open floodplain meadows, orchard strips (Streuobstwiesen), farmland, and a golf course beneath Weitenburg Castle. Its side valleys are similarly shaped, providing a mosaic of habitats for plant and animal life. Designated in 1981 by the Tübingen district office, the landscape protection area preserves both the scenic and ecological character of the Neckar valley system. It functions as a recreational green space for the local population while safeguarding a richly structured transition between valley floor and forested slopes.
