A tidal-flat sanctuary for migratory birds on the Central Visayas flyway

Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary

The Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected tidal flat and coastal ecosystem located off the eastern coast of Mactan Island in Cebu, Philippines. It sits within the larger Olango Island Group, a cluster of seven low-lying islands and islets in the Central Visayas region, between the Cebu Strait to the south and the Camotes Sea to the north. The sanctuary encompasses roughly 920 hectares of mangrove forest, seagrass beds, mudflats, sandflats, and salt marsh surrounding Olango Island. What makes the sanctuary internationally significant is its position on one of the most important migratory bird flyways in the world. Each year, tens of thousands of shorebirds travel along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway between breeding grounds in Siberia, northern China, and Japan and wintering areas in Australia and New Zealand. Olango serves as both a critical refueling stop and a wintering ground, hosting the largest known concentration of migratory birds in the Philippines. The sanctuary was declared a protected area under Presidential Proclamation No. 903 in 1992 and became the first Philippine site to be inscribed on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance in 1994. Beyond its birdlife, the surrounding reef flats and offshore waters support corals, reef fish, and diving sites that contribute to the area's broader ecological and touristic value.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
