Pagaibamba Protection Forest

Pagaibamba Protection Forest is a protected natural area in the Cajamarca region of northern Peru, established in 1987 to preserve the water supply of surrounding towns, maintain the local water cycle, protect road infrastructure, and guard against soil erosion. The reserve sits in a mountainous stretch of the Andes between roughly 2,300 and 2,800 meters in elevation, where steep terrain is dissected by small creeks and waterfalls. Ecologically, the area falls within the wet tropical mountain forest zone of the Holdridge classification system, supporting a mix of native trees, palm trees, tree ferns, bamboo-like grasses, and tall grasslands. Wildlife of regional importance inhabits the forest, including the spectacled bear, the Andean condor, and several endemic or restricted-range species, while the reserve also faces ongoing pressure from deforestation and slash-and-burn agriculture. As a protection forest rather than a strictly untouched wilderness zone, Pagaibamba combines biodiversity conservation with practical watershed and infrastructure protection, making it a small but meaningful piece of Peru's network of natural areas managed by SERNANP.
