Poland's first national park, protecting the dramatic Dunajec gorge and the limestone Pieniny Mountains.
Pieniny National Park
Pieniny National Park is one of twenty-three national parks in Poland and was established on 1 June 1932, making it the country's first national park. It lies in the Lesser Poland (Małopolskie) Voivodeship in the southern part of the country, close to the border with Slovakia, and covers the most scenically and biologically valuable parts of the Pieniny Proper mountain range. The park protects compact limestone massifs, deep gorges, and rocky cliffs along the Dunajec River, including the famous Trzy Korony (Three Crowns) massif, the Pieniny Czorsztyńskie range, the Pieninki ridges, and the iconic Pieniński Przełom Dunajec gorge. Despite covering only a small area, Pieniny combines dramatic karst scenery with exceptionally rich flora and fauna, supporting high-altitude plant species far above their usual range and a large number of endemic and relict organisms. The park is known for its outstanding landscape and biodiversity at very modest altitude, and it holds a special place in Polish conservation history as the result of early cross-border cooperation with Czechoslovakia. Today it remains a flagship protected area of the Polish Carpathians and one of the most intensively visited parks in the country.
