Vast medieval silver and lead mine workings beneath the Silesian landscape, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Podziemia Tarnogórsko-Bytomskie

Podziemia Tarnogórsko-Bytomskie is one of the largest systems of underground workings in Poland and Europe, forming the surviving remains of centuries of silver-bearing ore mining centered on the historic Fryderyk mine in the Garb Tarnogórski area of Upper Silesia. Beneath the town of Tarnowskie Góry and its surroundings, the site preserves an extensive labyrinth of adits, tunnels, shafts, chambers, and stopes, together with the technical equipment used to manage flooding and keep the workings accessible over generations. The underground network reflects the changing character of ore extraction from the medieval period through the industrial age, when the region was among Europe's earliest and most productive centers of silver and lead mining. Today the site is recognized internationally for its industrial heritage: in 2017 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and in Poland it is protected as a historical monument and as a Natura 2000 site because the cool, extensive tunnels serve as one of the most important bat hibernation habitats in Upper Silesia.
