Pstroszyce Natura 2000 Site

Pstroszyce is a small protected natural area in southern Poland, designated as a Site of Community Importance within the European Union Natura 2000 ecological network. With a surface area of roughly 19 hectares, it lies on the Miechów Upland in the Małopolska region, within the administrative district of Gmina Miechów. Although compact in size, the site is ecologically valuable because it preserves two rare and sensitive habitat types side by side: dry xerothermic grassland and oak-hornbeam forest. The site's xerothermic grassland represents one of the warmer, sun-exposed plant communities characteristic of limestone-rich uplands south of the Polish Jura chain. Together with its patches of Tilio-Carpinetum woodland, it forms a vegetation mosaic that supports a significant number of protected and regionally rare plant species. Several orchids, steppe-type forbs, and characteristic calcareous grassland species find refuge here, making the site a notable botanical location despite its modest size. Formally proposed as a Special Area of Conservation and currently classified as a Site of Community Importance, Pstroszyce contributes to Poland's broader network of Natura 2000 areas dedicated to protecting habitat diversity in the Miechów region. It is part of a local cluster of reserves safeguarding the disappearing dry grassland ecosystems of the Miechowska Upland, an important stronghold for thermophilic flora in central Europe.
