Raggeds Wilderness

Raggeds Wilderness is a federally designated U.S. Wilderness Area in the Elk Mountains of west-central Colorado, lying northwest of the mountain town of Crested Butte. It spans a large tract across the Gunnison County portion of the range and protects a contiguous block of forested slopes, high basins, and jagged alpine terrain that has become characteristic of the broader Elk Mountains landscape. The wilderness was established in 1980 across national forest lands shared by the White River and Gunnison National Forests, making it one of several large wilderness units introduced during the Colorado Wilderness Act era. Its elevation profile rises from canyon-bottom forests to true alpine summits, producing a striking vertical range of habitats that includes everything from montane fir and aspen stands up through exposed tundra. Raggeds is valued today largely as a backcountry destination, linked by roughly ninety miles of trails to neighboring wilderness areas and to the recreational network around Crested Butte. Its position between the Maroon Bells Snowmass Wilderness and the West Elk Wilderness gives it a central role in regional wilderness protection within the Gunnison country.
