Rita Blanca National Grassland

Rita Blanca National Grassland is a federally protected shortgrass prairie landscape spread across the high plains of the Texas Panhandle and the western Oklahoma Panhandle. Centered in northwestern Dallam County, Texas, and southern Cimarron County, Oklahoma, the grassland sits near the small community of Texline and is closely associated with the larger regional hub of Dalhart, Texas. Rather than a single contiguous block of public land, the protected area is a mosaic of U.S. Forest Service parcels woven among privately owned ranches and farms, preserving a fragment of the native Great Plains ecosystem. The grassland is best understood as a legacy of the Dust Bowl era, when severe wind erosion across the southern plains exposed the fragility of over-plowed native prairie. Federal programs of the 1930s and 1940s purchased failed cropland, and in 1960 Congress formally approved the creation of Rita Blanca National Grassland alongside its sister unit, Kiowa National Grassland in New Mexico. Today the area is recognized for its semi-arid shortgrass vegetation and its role as habitat for pronghorn, prairie dogs, coyotes, and raptors across an elevation range that climbs from about 3,700 feet near the southeastern corner to roughly 4,700 feet in the northwestern part of the grassland.
