A brackish lagoon on Zealand shaped by a failed 19th-century land reclamation project.

Saltbæk Vig

Saltbæk Vig is a large shallow brackish lagoon on the northwestern coast of Zealand, Denmark, located a few kilometers northeast of the town of Kalundborg. Covering roughly 16 square kilometers, it is the largest lake in western Zealand and the fifth largest lake in Denmark, even though the water body is essentially a former coastal inlet rather than a natural inland lake. The lagoon originated from an ambitious but ultimately unsuccessful 19th-century land reclamation project that aimed to drain the inlet and convert it into farmland. When the effort was finally abandoned in the early 20th century, the resulting brackish basin gradually developed into a rich wetland habitat for waterbirds and coastal vegetation. Today, Saltbæk Vig is protected and recognized as part of Denmark's Natura 2000 network. Its significance lies in the combination of cultural-industrial history, visible landscape engineering, and ecological recovery. The site illustrates how human intervention in the coastal zone can fail and subsequently transform into a valued natural area, making Saltbæk Vig an interesting example of unintended ecological restoration.
