Schlangenberg Nature Reserve

Schlangenberg Nature Reserve is a compact protected area of about 124 hectares in the Städteregion Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, situated east of the town of Stolberg and adjacent to the district of Breinigerberg. The reserve sits on a Devonian limestone ridge that was mineralized by zinc, lead, and cadmium ores over geological time, leaving behind soils so rich in heavy metals that almost no ordinary vegetation can survive. This toxic legacy, far from being a wasteland, has produced one of Europe's most important habitats for so-called Galmei flora, a specialised group of plants that tolerate zinc- and lead-rich substrates and are otherwise extremely rare on the continent. The protected area is one of thirty-seven nature reserves belonging to the municipality of Stolberg and has been formally designated since 1975. Around an open hill called Schlangenberg, which rises to roughly 276 metres above sea level, the reserve combines open heaths, nutrient-poor grasslands, pockets of beech woodland, and old mining traces. Its botanical importance is so great that the Yellow Calamine Violet (Viola calaminaria) was originally known in the wild only from this site before further populations were identified elsewhere in the region. Beyond botany, Schlangenberg also supports a rich fauna of butterflies, grasshoppers, reptiles, and birds of open countryside, and serves as a reintroduction site for the Yellow-bellied Toad. The combination of heavy-metal grassland, orchid-rich beech forest, industrial history, and ongoing conservation management makes it a distinctive ecological island within the broader Eifel landscape.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
