Slepeč Natural Monument

Slepeč is a small protected natural monument in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, situated near the village of Kochánky in the Mladá Boleslav district. The site was designated in 1984 to conserve an oak-hornbeam woodland that supports a suite of rare and thermophilous plant species, including what is described as the only surviving population of the lady's slipper orchid (Cypripedium calceolus) in the Pojizeří area. Despite its modest size of less than nine hectares, the monument carries regional botanical importance because it concentrates a notable diversity of protected wildflowers, woodland orchids, and rare saprophytic fungi within a single lowland forest stand. Its protected status reflects an effort to preserve a remnant of warm-loving lowland forest vegetation in an otherwise heavily cultivated landscape of central Bohemia. The park lies at modest elevations between roughly 200 and 240 meters above sea level in a gently rolling terrain characteristic of the Jizera basin, where the surviving woodland fragment serves both as a refuge for native forest flora and as a reference site for conservation of thermophilous forest communities in the region.
