Smečno Natural Monument

Smečno is a natural monument (přírodní památka) located in the Kladno District of the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, on the northwestern edge of the town of Smečno. It occupies a relatively compact area of around 77 hectares sitting between roughly 309 and 396 meters in elevation, on the geological border between two regional landform units: the Džbán upland and the Prague Plateau (Pražská plošina). The protected area was established on 23 July 2012 by the Regional Authority of the Central Bohemian Region, primarily to safeguard a Natura 2000 site of European importance. The monument's defining ecological value is the presence of a strong, viable population of Osmoderma barnabita, commonly known as the hermit beetle or páchník hnědý, a scarab beetle classified as strongly endangered in the region. Because this species depends on old deciduous trees with natural cavities, the natural monument's protection is essentially a protection of mature, cavity-rich woodland. Beyond the beetle's habitat, the area also represents a transitional Central Bohemian landscape where the forested character of the Džbán hills meets the more open, plateau-like terrain to the south. Although small in size, Smečno is an important local example of how a single species of strong conservation concern can drive the formal protection of an entire patch of woodland, and how European Natura 2000 designation can shape the management of even very modest protected sites in the Czech countryside.
