Covering roughly 6.5 hectares near the village of Donnstetten in the municipality of Römerstein, it occupies the highest point of the local cadastral area in a locality known as the Kanzel. The protected area preserves a traditional summer sheep pasture characterized by nutrient-poor grassland (Magerrasen) dotted with mature pasture beeches (Weidebuchen), giving the open Swabian Alb landscape a distinctive park-like character. A row of fifteen linden trees runs along the western edge, and the area includes notable rocky features such as the Hockender Stein and additional rock formations on the Kanzel, which are also recognized as protected geological sites. Although modest in size, the site plays an important role within a broader network of conservation designations on the Swabian Alb. It lies within an EU Habitats Directive (FFH) area and sits in the care zone of the Schwäbische Alb UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, helping to safeguard a characteristic cultural landscape of the Kuppenalb.
