Stubbe Sø

Stubbe Sø is a large, shallow, nutrient-rich lake on the Djursland peninsula in eastern Jutland, Denmark, and the largest lake on Djursland and the third largest in Jutland. It lies in a landscape of lakes, mires, and lowlands northeast of the Mols Bjerge uplands and drains to the Kattegat via the Havmølle Å stream. Originally a heath lake surrounded by heather-covered hills, the area was largely reforested and today is dominated by dark coniferous forest, with a lighter fringe of alder and birch along the shoreline. The lake and its surrounding wetland and forest habitats are formally designated as an EU Natura 2000 site and form part of Nationalpark Mols Bjerge. Stubbe Sø is especially valued as a breeding site and, even more importantly, as a staging and resting area for large flocks of geese, ducks, grebes, and mergansers. Raptors such as white-tailed eagles and ospreys are regularly observed, and signs of otters have been recorded around the outflow into Havmølle Å.
