Poland's third national park, protecting the ancient mountain forests of the Holy Cross Mountains.

Świętokrzyski National Park

Świętokrzyski National Park is one of Poland's 23 national parks, located in the central part of the Holy Cross Mountains (Góry Świętokrzyskie) in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. Established on 1 May 1950 as the third national park in Poland, after Pieniński and Białowieski, it protects the Łysogóry range, which includes the mountain's two highest peaks: Łysica at 614 meters and Łysa Góra at 595 meters above sea level. The park is overwhelmingly forested, with woodlands covering about 95 percent of its roughly 76 square kilometer surface. Mixed fir forests, Carpathian-type beech forests, and rare stands of the Świętokrzyskie rowan association give the landscape a strongly natural character. Among the most distinctive features are the gołoborza, large periglacial rubble fields on the upper slopes and ridges, particularly visible on Łysa Góra and Łysica, which give the park its most striking terrain. Beyond its ecological value, the park holds deep cultural significance. On Łysa Góra stand the remains of a Benedictine monastery founded in the 12th century, and the site has long been associated with the pre-Christian worship of pagan Slavic deities. Today the park serves as both a refuge for old-growth forest species and a regionally important destination for hiking.
