Tarcutta Hills Reserve

Tarcutta Hills Reserve is a 738-hectare nature reserve on the lower western slopes of the Great Dividing Range in central western New South Wales, Australia. It sits roughly 427 kilometres southwest of Sydney, close to the Hume Highway and about 15 kilometres south of the village of Tarcutta. The reserve is owned and managed by Bush Heritage Australia, which purchased the property in 1999, and it is listed on Australia's Register of the National Estate. The reserve's defining value is ecological: it protects the largest area of intact grassy white box woodland in Australia, a vegetation type that has been extensively cleared for agriculture across its former range. A 288-hectare addition acquired in late 2020 extended the reserve northward with a healthy stand of white box, yellow box, and Blakely's red gum grassy woodland, a community classified as critically endangered in New South Wales. In addition to its woodland values, the reserve lies within the South-west Slopes of NSW Important Bird Area, recognised by BirdLife International for the conservation significance of swift parrots and superb parrots. The mix of habitat condition, woodland extent, and location on a major migratory corridor gives Tarcutta Hills Reserve a significance that extends well beyond its modest footprint.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
