Austria's smallest national park protecting a scenic breakthrough valley on the Czech border

Thayatal National Park

Thayatal National Park is Austria's smallest national park, encompassing 13.3 square kilometers of protected landscape in Lower Austria along the border with the Czech Republic. The park centers on the dramatic Thaya River valley, one of Austria's most beautiful breakthrough valleys, where the river has carved a deep gorge through gneiss terrain. Established in 2000, the park forms a transboundary conservation unit with the adjacent Czech Podyjí National Park, allowing visitors to cross between the two countries via the Thaya bridge at Hardegg. The park's exceptional ecological significance stems from its position at the climatic boundary between the humid plateau climate of the Waldviertel and the continental Pannonian climate of the Weinviertel, creating a remarkable diversity of habitats within a relatively small area.
