Truppenübungsplatz Baumholder

Truppenübungsplatz Baumholder is a large military training area of the German Bundeswehr in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, located south of the Hunsrück between the rivers Nahe and Glan on the edge of the North Palatinate Uplands. Covering roughly 116 square kilometers, it is one of the larger active training grounds of the Bundeswehr and is used jointly by German forces, the United States Army, and other NATO allies for infantry, armor, artillery, and air-to-ground exercises. Beyond its military function, the restricted public access and long history of limited civilian use have allowed the landscape to develop into an important secondary habitat for flora and fauna. The training area is largely covered by the EU Habitats Directive site "Baumholder und Preußische Berge" and the EU Bird Protection Area "Baumholder," bringing it within the European Natura 2000 network. The site is also notable for geological features, including an unusually well-preserved cooled lava flow exposed in a former quarry, and for agate deposits that have attracted amateur geologists. Although the area was briefly considered as a candidate for a national park in Rhineland-Palatinate, the idea was later abandoned, leaving it as one of the most ecologically valuable military landscapes in Germany.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
