Turuépano National Park

Turuépano National Park is a protected area of significant ecological importance located in the eastern Venezuelan state of Sucre, spanning across the Benítez, Cajigal, Libertador, and Mariño municipalities. The park occupies a strategic position along the southern coastline of the Gulf of Paria, situated north of the San Juan River and encompassing a portion of the broader Orinoco Delta swamp forests ecoregion. Established on June 5, 1991 through Decree No. 1,634, this national park covers approximately 726 square kilometers of deltaic lowlands characterized by a unique combination of marine and freshwater influences. The protected area represents one of Venezuela's most distinctive coastal wetland ecosystems, where extensive mangrove stands, intricate canal networks, and sheltered lagoons create a complex habitat that supports remarkable biodiversity, including the critically important West Indian manatee. The region's constant tropical climate, with minimal temperature variation throughout the year, sustains this productive wetland environment and supports the park's role as a sanctuary for both resident and migratory species.
