Uroczysko Łopień

Uroczysko Łopień is a small Special Area of Conservation located on Mount Łopień within the Beskid Wyspowy mountain range of southern Poland, in the Małopolskie voivodeship. The site is structured around two separately designated tracts of land: a north-western slope containing the Czartorysko landslide with its rock formations and caves, and a north-eastern section near the mountain clearing of Myconiówka that protects a network of habitats including highland peat bogs, Carpathian beech forests, and boreal bog woodlands. Geologically, the area is built from Magura sandstones, which have eroded and fractured to produce a series of caves that today serve as critical shelters for cave-dwelling bats. Ecologically, Uroczysko Łopień is recognized as one of the most important bat hibernation sites in the Polish Carpathians and hosts a mosaic of protected habitats that combine primeval forest stands with peat-forming wetland vegetation. The site is significant at the European scale because several of its protected species and habitats are classified as priority features under the Natura 2000 framework. Its combination of geological structures, forest ecosystems, wetlands, and underground refuges gives it an unusually concentrated conservation value within the broader Carpathian landscape.
