Velká Volavka Natural Monument

Velká Volavka is a very small natural monument (přírodní památka) in the Ústecký kraj of the Czech Republic, situated roughly half a kilometer southeast of the village of Volevčice in the Most district. The protected site lies at the northwestern foot of the hill also named Velká Volavka, part of the Ranské středohoří range within the broader České středohoří system, and only covers about half a hectare at elevations between roughly 262 and 274 meters. The reserve was established in 2000 by the former District Office in Most specifically to protect a fragile community of halophilous, or salt-tolerant, plants in a landscape context where such vegetation is otherwise very rare. Its most important role is as the only known location in the Most district for the critically endangered sea plantain (Plantago maritima), and it also shelters several other protected salt-loving species that together form a small but ecologically distinctive inland salt-steppe community. Despite its modest size and its industrialized surroundings, Velká Volavka is a regionally valuable botanical site, valued for preserving vegetation types that originated in older saline environments of the Bohemian lowlands and that today survive only in scattered refugia across the Czech landscape. It functions as a small but essential node in the broader network of protected areas in the Most basin, illustrating how even tiny patches of unusual habitat can carry significant conservation weight.
