Denmark's largest national park protecting a world-famous tidal wetland ecosystem

Wadden Sea National Park

Wadden Sea National Park encompasses the Danish portion of the Wadden Sea, a vast tidal wetland system stretching along the southwestern coast of Denmark from Ho Bugt to the German border. Established as a national park in 2008 and officially inaugurated in 2010, it is by far the largest of Denmark's national parks outside of Greenland, covering approximately 1,466 square kilometers. The park encompasses a distinctive landscape of tidal flats, salt marshes, islands, and coastal dunes, including the islands of Fanø, Mandø, and Rømø, as well as the Skallingen peninsula and the Varde Å river valley. This area represents one of the most significant intertidal ecosystems in Europe, recognized internationally for its extraordinary biodiversity and its role as a critical stopover point for millions of migratory birds traveling between Arctic breeding grounds and wintering areas in southern Europe and Africa.
