Wagensteigtal-Höllental

Wagensteigtal-Höllental is a designated protected landscape in the southeastern Black Forest of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The area covers roughly 2,912 hectares across the municipalities of Buchenbach, Kirchzarten, and St. Märgen in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district. It was established on 6 October 1975 under the authority of the lower nature conservation office at the district administration. The protected area preserves a varied and characteristic Black Forest landscape shaped by forested ridges, narrow valleys, and the gorge-like breakthrough of the Rotbach, a headwater stream of the Dreisam. Its geographic position bridges two natural regions of the Schwarzwald: the southeastern Black Forest and the High Black Forest around Hinterzarten. Together with its forest cover, river valleys, and connection to broader ecological networks, the area functions as a key piece of the regional Black Forest landscape mosaic. Part of the protected landscape also overlaps with the European Habitats Directive site Hochschwarzwald um Hinterzarten and the Central Black Forest bird protection area, giving it additional ecological significance beyond its national landscape designation.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
