Wernau (Neckar) Landscape Protection Area

Wernau (Neckar) is a designated landscape protection area (Landschaftsschutzgebiet) in the Landkreis Esslingen district of Baden-Württemberg, in southwestern Germany. The protected area is composed of six separate sections that ring the town of Wernau on the northern edge of the Neckar valley, at the transition between the Middle Swabian Alb foothills (Mittleres Albvorland) and the Filder plain. The landscape it preserves is a classic mosaic of small-scale Swabian cultural countryside: traditional meadows, orchard meadows (Streuobstwiesen), hedgerows, field copses, watercourses, and small woodlands. Several of these elements also serve as buffer zones around the existing nature reserves of Wernauer Baggerseen and Wernauer Lehmgrube, strengthening the ecological coherence of the broader landscape. Established in 1995 by order of the Landratsamt Esslingen, the area consolidates earlier local protections and is managed today as a category V (Protected Landscape/Seascape) area under the IUCN classification system. Its purpose is as much about local recreation and the visual character of the countryside as it is about safeguarding habitats for plants and animals.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
