Westricher Moorniederung

The Westricher Moorniederung is a protected landscape in the Westpfalz region of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is designated as a Natura 2000 Fauna-Flora-Habitat area, established in 1998, and covers roughly 2,152 hectares of low-lying moorland, marshland, wet meadows, and floodplain forest. Geographically, it forms a broad belt of swampy lowlands situated between the Nordpfälzer Bergland to the north, the Westricher Hochfläche to the east, the Pfälzerwald to the south, and the Kirkeler Wald area to the west. The area stretches for about 40 kilometers from west to east across the St. Ingbert-Kaiserslauterer Senke, reaching from the Bliesaue near Homburg through Landstuhl and Kaiserslautern. Elevations are modest, generally between 222 and 260 meters above sea level, shaped largely by the drainage systems of the Erbach, Glan, Mohrbach, and Lauter rivers. The landscape is characterized by a mosaic of moors, wet grasslands, riparian forests, and scattered hills, making it one of the most ecologically significant wetland corridors in southwestern Germany. Beyond its conservation status as a single Natura 2000 site, the Westricher Moorniederung hosts a dense cluster of individually designated nature reserves, giving the area a layered protection profile. It is recognized for its value to wetland wildlife, mire habitats, and bird populations, and serves as a key example of lowland moorland conservation within the Palatinate region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
