Widnica

Widnica is a small protected natural area in southern Poland, designated as a Natura 2000 Site of Community Importance under the code PLH120076. It lies on the Wyżyna Miechowskiej, or Miechów Upland, in the Małopolska region, within the administrative district of Gmina Miechów, south of the village of Widnica. The site covers only about 7.86 hectares, making it one of the more compact entries in the Polish Natura 2000 network. Its entire conservation value rests on a single habitat type: xerothermic grassland classified within the Festuco-Brometea class and the warm-loving Asplenion septentrionalis; Festucion pallentis alliance. These dry, sun-exposed calcareous swards are a priority feature of Poland's natural heritage and are increasingly rare across Central Europe under modern land use. Widnica lies within the broader Obszar Chronionego Krajobrazu Wyżyny Miechowskiej, or Miechów Upland Protected Landscape Area, which provides additional landscape-level protection around the site. Its significance is therefore both local, as a surviving patch of dry grassland amid agricultural land, and regional, as part of a wider network of Miechów Upland grassland reserves.
