Wupper und Wupperhänge südlich Müngsten

Wupper und Wupperhänge südlich Müngsten is a nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) located in the city of Remscheid in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It protects approximately 144 hectares of steep, forested slopes along the Wupper river, southwest of the Remscheid city center and south of the famous Müngsten Bridge. The reserve was formally designated in 2003 under the key number RS-019 and is classified as an IUCN Category IV Habitat/Species Management Area. The defining character of the reserve is a roughly 2.8 kilometer stretch of west- to northwest-facing valley slope, rising 30 to 60 degrees in gradient, cloaked in closed deciduous forest and incised by nearly natural spring brooks. Rock outcrops and cliffs of local slate frame the valleys, while the Wupper itself forms the western boundary and the city border with Solingen. The landscape, created by centuries of river incision into the Bergisches Land uplands, gives the area its combination of dramatic rock formations, steep ravines, cascading streams, and old broadleaf woodland. The reserve is more than a scenic valley: it is also an EU Natura 2000 site and a Fauna-Flora-Habitat (FFH) area under the European Habitats Directive. Its conservation role centers on preserving near-natural low mountain river systems, Hainzsimsen-Beech forest, spring habitats, and the fish and bird species that depend on the connected stream network. Management is carried out under the Remscheid landscape plan by the city's lower landscape authority.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
