Wüstebachtal

Wüstebachtal is a small nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in the Städteregion Aachen, in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It lies within the Eifel mountains, near the town of Monschau, and forms part of the larger Eifel National Park and the Hohes Venn-Eifel Nature Park. The reserve is named after the Wüstebach, the upper course of the Erkensruhr stream, which belongs to the Rur river system. The protected area centres on the narrow floodplain of the Wüstebach and its tributaries Schwarzbach and Viehbach, a valley landscape of brook corridors, wet meadows, marshy remnants, and adjacent spruce forest. Its ecological value is closely tied to this combination of flowing water, species-rich Bärwurz meadows with large stands of the yellow narcissus, alder and ash gallery strips, and small standing-water features such as fire-water ponds and a former fish pond. Because of these habitats, the valley is classified as an IUCN Category IV Habitat/Species Management Area and is integrated into the EU Natura 2000 network as part of a larger FFH site along the Püngel, Wüstebach, and upper Erkensruhr. Although modest in size, the reserve has notable conservation significance. It safeguards red-listed plant and animal species of North Rhine-Westphalia, including rare ferns, bats, and characteristic wet-meadow flora, and it forms one of several protected valley landscapes around Monschau that together shape the region's reputation for ecological diversity.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
