Adelegg

The Adelegg is a designated Fauna-Flora-Habitat (FFH) site forming part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas. It lies in the far southeast of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany, in the Landkreis Ravensburg, extending across parts of the municipalities of Isny im Allgäu and Leutkirch im Allgäu. The protected area is dominated by the heavily forested, alpine-influenced ridge of the Adelegg, which is incised by deeply cut ravines and valleys. On the steep slopes, gorge and slope mixed forests thrive, while the higher elevations contain high pastures with nutrient-poor grassland habitats. The site is composed of twelve separate sub-areas that together cover roughly 633 hectares. Ecologically, the Adelegg is notable for its diversity of forest and grassland habitat types, including calcareous beech woods, orchid-rich beech forests, and Nardus grasslands. Several species of community interest are present, including the Eurasian beaver, the yellow-bellied toad, and the lady's slipper orchid. The site is almost completely embedded within the adjacent Vogelschutzgebiet Adelegg bird protection area and borders the Bavarian FFH site Kürnacher Wald.
