Ahrgebirge Bird Sanctuary

Ahrgebirge Bird Sanctuary is a European Union bird protection area in the southern part of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Covering roughly 580 hectares of forested terrain, the sanctuary extends along the North Rhine-Westphalian side of the Ahrgebirge, a medium-height mountain ridge of the Eifel that straddles the border between North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate. The protected landscape is shaped by hilly relief, near-natural mixed and deciduous forests, scattered conifer stands, natural stream channels, and well-developed woodland edges. It was designated under the EU Birds Directive in 2004 and is administered through the Cologne Government Region, forming an essential complement to the larger Ahrgebirge area that lies across the state border in Rhineland-Palatinate. Although relatively modest in size, the sanctuary plays a meaningful role for woodland-dependent bird species in the western Eifel. Its combination of extensive mature forest, old trees, deadwood, and quiet stream valleys makes it one of the more important breeding habitats for specialist birds in the region.
