Amerikafeld und Schindkaute bei Steinheim

Amerikafeld und Schindkaute bei Steinheim is a small nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) and Natura 2000 site located in the city of Hanau, in the German state of Hesse. It lies west of the Steinheim district, between a district road to the south and the federal road B 45 to the west, forming a compact patch of open landscape surrounded by the expanding suburban fringes of the Rhine-Main metropolitan area. The reserve protects one of the few surviving sand dry grasslands (Sandtrockenrasen) in the Rhine-Main region. These open habitats date back to the last ice age, when wind-deposited sands shaped the local topography, and have been kept open through centuries of grazing. Today the area is still managed by a local shepherd who uses sheep to prevent trees and shrubs from reclaiming the dry grassland. Despite its modest size, the reserve is ecologically significant, hosting specialized plant and insect species adapted to nutrient-poor sandy soils, and it stands as a small but important refuge of an open landscape type that has largely disappeared from the surrounding region.
