Beeder Bruch

Beeder Bruch is a protected landscape and bird sanctuary in the Saarpfalz-Kreis district of Saarland, in southwestern Germany. It sits at the heart of the Bliesgau UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is shaped almost entirely by the floodplain of the Blies river, which forms the area's southwestern boundary. The combination of riverine forest fragments, wet meadows, reedbeds, ponds, and drainage ditches has made the roughly 127 square kilometer site both a recognized Bird Protection Area within the Natura 2000 network and one of the most frequented local nature destinations in the region. The area is closely associated with the nearby historic city of Homburg and the municipality of Kirkel, spanning parts of the Homburg districts of Beeden and Schwarzenacker together with the Kirkel district of Altstadt. Its establishment as a landscape protection area in 2015 built on a much earlier recognition of its bird value in 2006, when it joined the European network of protected bird areas. What sets Beeder Bruch apart is the active management of its open floodplain character. Visitors using viewing platforms and an observation pavilion can watch water buffalo, Heck cattle, and Konik wild horses that have been introduced to maintain meadow and wetland habitats, while a wide range of waterbirds and woodland birds use the site for breeding, resting, and wintering.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
