Europe's last fragment of primeval lowland forest, protecting the free-roaming bison of Białowieża.
Białowieża National Park
Białowieża National Park lies in the far northeastern corner of Poland, in Podlaskie Voivodeship, very close to the border with Belarus. It was created in 1932 from the earlier Rezervat forestry district, making it the second national park established in Poland, after Pieniny, and one of the earliest in Europe. The park protects the best preserved fragment of the Białowieża Forest, the largest remaining stretch of primeval, lowland deciduous and mixed forest in temperate Europe. The park is internationally known for its strict-protection core, which still shows the layered structure and natural dynamics of a true primeval forest, including enormous amounts of deadwood and very tall spruces, oaks, lindens, and hornbeams. It is equally famous as the place where the European bison, the heaviest land animal on the continent, was saved from total extinction at the beginning of the twentieth century and continues to live in a free-ranging wild population. Because the Polish park sits directly beside the Belarussian Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park, the two units together form a transboundary World Heritage property inscribed on the UNESCO list in 1979 and extended in 1992. This combination of ecological, zoological, and cultural significance makes Białowieża one of the most scientifically studied forests in Europe and a touchstone in debates about the meaning and limits of wilderness protection.
