Bühlertal Vellberg-Geislingen

Bühlertal Vellberg-Geislingen is a protected landscape along the Bühler river in the Landkreis Schwäbisch Hall of northeastern Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Designated as a Habitats Directive (FFH) site under the EU Natura 2000 network, the area covers roughly 847 hectares and follows the meandering course of the Bühler from Vellberg downstream to its confluence with the Kocher near Geislingen am Kocher. The site is notable for its combination of mixed hillside forests, traditionally managed meadows, and a structurally diverse river valley. Its habitat mosaic includes species-rich lowland hay meadows, wet tall-herb fringes, lime-rich seepage springs, calcareous rock outcrops, cave systems, and floodplain woodland. The FFH designation legally took effect in January 2019 following a designation order issued by the Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart in October 2018. The protected area sits within three overlapping natural regions: the Schwäbisch-Fränkische Waldberge and the adjacent Kocher-Jagst and Hohenloher-Haller plains. It spans parts of six municipalities: Wolpertshausen, Ilshofen, Vellberg, Schwäbisch Hall, Braunsbach, and Obersontheim. Within it lies the smaller Naturschutzgebiet Unteres Bühlertal, forming the core of a coherent conservation corridor along the Bühler valley.
