Peru's oldest national park protecting Andean montane forests and páramo ecosystems in the northern Andes

Cutervo National Park

Cutervo National Park is Peru's oldest protected area, established in 1961 and located in the northern Peruvian Andes within the Cajamarca Region. The park encompasses 8,214 hectares of dramatic mountainous terrain spanning elevations from 1,550 to 3,500 meters above sea level. It protects critical ecosystems of Andean montane forests and páramo grasslands, serving as a vital headwater conservation area for numerous streams originating in the Cordillera de Tarros, the park's most prominent mountain range. The park's ecological significance is underscored by its location within the Peruvian Yungas ecoregion, one of the most biodiverse montane forest systems in South America. Its cloud-covered forests and high-altitude grasslands provide habitat for several threatened species including the spectacled bear, mountain tapir, and oilbird.
