Dankmarshäuser Rhäden

The Dankmarshäuser Rhäden is a protected wetland area in the western Thuringian county of Wartburgkreis, immediately on the border with Hesse. It occupies the southern part of a large former marshland basin in the broad valley of the Werra, an area shaped by salt leaching and tectonic subsidence over many millennia. After centuries of drainage and intensive agricultural use, the area has been progressively restored since the 1990s into a near-natural floodplain mosaic of wet meadows, shallow open water, reedbeds and wet woodland. The reserve is regarded as one of the most important breeding and resting sites for waterbirds and meadow-nesting waders in Thuringia and Hesse, and is a documented complementary area to the larger Hessian Rhäden immediately adjacent. In addition to its biodiversity role, it forms a critical node in the so-called Green Belt (Grünes Band) corridor along the former inner-German border, now designated as a National Natural Monument. The area is protected in multiple layers: as a Thuringian nature reserve (designated 1995), as a European Fauna-Flora-Habitat (FFH) site under Natura 2000, and as part of the EU Birds Directive special protection area Werra-Aue zwischen Breitungen und Creuzburg.
