In 1958 the district assembly of the former Kreis Sebnitz provisionally secured the site, and on 30 March 1961 the area was formally designated as the Naturschutzgebiet Gimpelfang. Decades later, in 1997, about half of the reserve was declared a strict total reserve in which all further human intervention is excluded, marking a decisive shift toward undisturbed, process-based conservation within the site.
