Gum Lagoon Conservation Park

Gum Lagoon Conservation Park is a protected area in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia, situated about 40 kilometres south-west of Keith and roughly 20 kilometres inland from the southern end of the Coorong. Covering thousands of hectares of calcarenite dune country with interdunal flats and slow-moving drainage, the park preserves a significant block of mallee woodland within an otherwise heavily cleared agricultural landscape. The park is best known for its role in malleefowl conservation, supporting an apparently sustainable population of this vulnerable ground-dwelling bird along the edge of its remaining range. Its mosaic of tea-tree scrub, wet heathland, mallee woodland, and ephemeral swamps provides habitat for a wide range of native plants and animals, and the area has been formally recognized by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area. Beyond its ecological importance, Gum Lagoon illustrates how a patchwork of public acquisitions, gathered opportunistically over decades, can build into a meaningful conservation reserve in a fragmented landscape. It stands as one of the more important refuges for dryland birdlife and native flora in the south-east of South Australia.
