Homochitto National Forest

Homochitto National Forest is a U.S. National Forest located in southwestern Mississippi, covering roughly 191,839 acres across parts of seven counties. It sits within the rolling terrain where loess bluffs meet the longleaf pine belt of the Deep South, creating a mosaic of forested ridges, stream valleys, and managed woodlands. The forest traces its modern character to the mid-1930s, when the Civilian Conservation Corps launched large-scale reforestation of badly depleted lands and built the early system of roads, recreation sites, and administrative infrastructure that still defines it today. It is now managed by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the National Forests in Mississippi network, with its headquarters co-located in Jackson alongside the state's other national forests. Ecologically, Homochitto is notable for its surprising botanical richness within a working southern forest landscape. Its flora includes around 850 vascular plant species, and its streams, while modest in bivalve diversity, support multiple freshwater mussel species and rare winter stoneflies, including one species first described from its waters.
