Husby Sø og Nørresø

Husby Sø og Nørresø is a Danish Natura 2000 habitat area in central western Jutland, designated for its shallow lake ecosystems and associated wetland habitats. The site comprises two main lakes, Husby Sø and Nørresø, together with surrounding bog, meadow, and reed bed landscapes that together cover about 352 hectares. The lakes lie in an old marine foreland south of Nissum Fjord and were once connected to Ringkøbing Fjord before a major drainage and diking project in the 1940s cut them off from the sea. Today, the lakes are fed mainly by pumped water from surrounding agricultural land, yet they have become remarkable freshwater refuges, registered as among the most botanically diverse lakes in Denmark. Designated habitat types include hard oligo-mesotrophic waters with stonewort lake vegetation, eutrophic lakes with rich aquatic plant communities, lake shores with small herb communities, and calcareous fens, alongside protected species such as the Eurasian otter and the aquatic plant water crowfoot.
