Inselrhein

Inselrhein, also known as the Rheinauen, is a stretch of the Upper Rhine between Mainz and Bingen that contains a chain of natural river islands (locally called Auen). The section runs roughly from the mouth of the Main river downstream to just before the Binger Loch, where the Upper Rhine gives way to the Middle Rhine. Together with adjoining groynes, still-water zones, and undeveloped banks, the islands form a continuous network of nature reserves and European Habitats Directive (FFH) sites. The floodplain forests that line the islands are among the most species-rich habitats in Europe, combining softwood communities of willows and poplars along the waterways with hardwood stands of ash, elm, and pedunculate oak further inland. The slow-moving side channels and gravel banks are important for wintering waterfowl and migratory waders, and the wider area is also designated as a Ramsar wetland of international importance. Beyond its ecological value, Inselrhein is notable for the way it preserves a traditional Rhine island landscape right at the cultural crossroads where the Main, Nahe, and Upper Rhine landscapes meet, between the wine-growing Rheingau and the urban centre of Mainz.
