Jenaer Forst

Jenaer Forst is a designated nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) located in the German state of Thuringia, west of the city of Jena and partly within the Saale-Holzland-Kreis. Established as a protected area in 2008, the roughly 540-hectare forest spans a limestone plateau between the Bundesstrasse 7 to the north, the Saale river to the east, and the A4 autobahn to the south. Although the broader Jenaer Forst landscape carries a long history of military, prison, and post-war use, the protected reserve has been the focus of active renaturation work, including the demolition of derelict buildings, the restoration of old dump sites, and the creation of new habitat features such as ponds. The reserve is ecologically significant for its dry, calcareous woodland habitats, which support rare orchids and threatened invertebrates, as well as several bat species and endangered breeding birds. Visitor infrastructure is woven into the wider forest rather than concentrated in the reserve itself, including the historic Forstturm observation tower from 1874, the Forststernwarte observatory, the Bismarckturm monument, and a network of hiking trails. The nearby Otto-Schott-Platz, which borders but lies outside the protected area, hosts the Forum Natura visitor center opened in 2022. Today, Jenaer Forst reflects the dual character of many German peri-urban forests: it serves simultaneously as a local recreation area for Jena, a working managed forest, and a place where conservationists are working to undo the legacies of wartime forced labor, Soviet military occupation, and decades of unregulated dumping.
