Kimmelkær Landkanal

Kimmelkær Landkanal is a very small protected natural area in central Jutland, Denmark, designated as a Natura 2000 habitat site. With a total area of only about 3 hectares, the site centers on a roughly 2.7 kilometer section of an old canal that runs through a former marine foreland landscape. The site is nationally significant because it hosts one of the few large and stable populations of vandranke, a rare aquatic plant species for which Denmark holds special national responsibility. The species is listed as acutely threatened on the Danish Red List and is protected under Annex II and Annex IV of the EU Habitats Directive. The canal follows a soft sandy bed and runs parallel to the small watercourse Star Grøft, draining toward Tim Engsø and Tim Å before eventually connecting to Stadil Fjord. Because of its ecological importance for a single highly protected species, Kimmelkær Landkanal is a disproportionately valuable site relative to its tiny footprint.
