Korkus Nature Reserve

Korkus is a small nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) located in the southeastern part of Eschweiler in the Städteregion Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It sits between the districts of Nothberg, Scherpenseel, and Volkenrath, framed by the Omerbach and Otterbach, two small streams that flow into the Inde river. The area was designated as a protected habitat and species management area under IUCN Category IV in 1990 and covers roughly five hectares of forest. The reserve is more than a patch of protected woodland; it is a landscape layered with deep human history. Iron ore and limestone were extracted here long before the Romans, and archaeological finds from stone tools to Iron Age pottery document thousands of years of intermittent settlement. In the 19th century, the Eschweiler Bergwerks-Verein briefly operated the ore mine 'Zur Guten Hoffnung' in the area. Today, the reserve preserves the wooded valley landscape and its surviving traces of ancient mining activity. Although small in size, Korkus is a useful example of how cultural and natural heritage intersect in the Eifel foothills. The protected-area framework of the landscape plan of Aachen and the management responsibility of the local landscape authority ensure that the forest, streams, and historic mining relics remain part of a coherent regional ecological network.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
